If you would be so kind, I’m compiling a playlist of songs for a friend and it’s turned into ‘Songs About Fishing’ I currently have two 1. Van Morrison – ‘And It Stoned Me’ & 2. Chas & Dave – ‘Wonder Where He Is Now’. If you could help me out with further suggestions that would be just super!
Or, if you prefer, come up with a clever pun on pop star names, for example, Johnny Marmite [gedditt?]
Think you can do better? Go on then
Black Type says
An obvious one – The Waterboys ‘Fisherman’s Blues’.
Also Paul Simon ‘Duncan’, with the immortal line ‘My father was a fisherman/My mama was a fisherman’s friend’…always cracks me up, that.

Here’s a little story I’d like to relate

Kid Dynamite says
Blyth Power’s “On The Viking Station” is not on YouTube in any acceptable form, but is full of fishing stuff, being about the Cod War, and the chorus goes “Cry Harry, cod and England”, so I don’t know what more you could want.

Or this, which I (like most people apparently) could have sworn that she’s singing “Don’t be afraid to catch fish”.
Locust says
Yup. Took me ages to put two and two together, even with hearing the title all the time… 😀
My theory is that Katy Perry also thought that the sentence “don’t be afraid to catch feels” was incredibly annoying, so she slurred her words intentionally…part of me wishes she would have dropped her F:s instead and told us to not be afraid to catch eels!

It’s a long hake on the road to mantaray.
Whale kipper a whelkhome in the eelside.
Carolina says
And there’s Whale Meat Again, which became a joke in WW2 because of the revolting fish/whale imports. But strangely enough Jim Capaldi’s second solo album is called Whale Meat Again too. The title song is quite funky
Tiggerlion says
Good to see you again, @Carolina. It’s been a while.

MC Escher says
Ooooh fishing. Many apologies.
Tiggerlion says
Did anyone watch Whitehouse and Mortimer doing it last night?
Martin Hairnet says
Just watched the first one. There was an interesting dynamic between the two of them – I thought I detected some deference on Bob Mortimer’s part, and Whitehouse seemed a bit guarded – so I’m looking forward to seeing how that relationship develops on subsequent episodes. I laughed quite a lot. Clearly, it draws some inspiration from The Trip.
Mike_H says
I was wondering if this was inspired by the US series “Fishing With John”, where Lounge Lizards musician John Lurie and various guests, such as Tom Waits and Dennis Hopper, go fishing for various marine creatures in exotic locations.
There’s not much resemblance, really.

I Must Be In A Good Place Now by Bobby Charles.
Oh what a good day to go fishing.
Blue Boy says
Sign on the Window by Bob Dylan:
Marry me a wife, catch rainbow trout
Have a bunch of kids who call me “pa”
That must be what it’s all about,
Junior Wells says
Was musing on this. Surprising how few songs there are dedicated to the topic of fishing given it is such an age old activity, across cultures , classes and demographics.
bigstevie says
Not at all Junior. There are plenty in the folk genre. Billy Connolly used to say folk music was 3 men in Aran jumpers singing about dead fishermen.
Lando Cakes says
Indeed. Love the Clancys’ take on Shoals of Herring:
