There are, appropriately, five titles in this series of affectionate parodies of Enid Blyton’s timeless characters, The Famous Five – Five On Brexit Island, Five Go Parenting, Five Go On A Strategy Away Day, Five Give Up The Booze and Five Go Gluten Free.
I’m sure many of us will recall happy childhood hours spent reading the adventures of those bewilderingly posh children, Julian, George, Dick and Anne, not forgetting of course their dog, the ever faithful Timmy. The endless picnics, the holidays, the scrapes they got into with smugglers, spies, escaped convicts to name just a few – the memories come flooding back!
Now the five are grown up, and these tales see them struggling to come terms with the realities and challenges of modern life and adulthood.
These short but often very funny stories are in similar vein to the Ladybird series for Grown Ups, although they perhaps have a slight disadvantage in having to maintain the jokes over considerably more pages compared to the very short Ladybird reads.
Nevertheless, the author does a good job in keeping the humour quotient suitably high, and each book is at an end almost before you know it.
Lashings of fun!
