What does it sound like?:
With Trump in The White House, America is ripe for the return of Slackers; well educated, anti-materialistic drop-outs who have no interest in politics and little concern for the world around them.
DUMB are not exactly Slackers. As their name suggests, they are not intellectual. They haven’t bothered to check the name hasn’t been taken already by a four piece band from Birmingham, UK. Their songs are sloppy but they are brief. No meandering guitar noodlings here. Only one track lasts longer than two and half minutes and the whole thing clocks in at well under half an hour. They are more Slacker Punk.
These are three youngsters from Austen, Texas just having fun without a care for the future. They like girls, drinking beer in a bar, hanging out at the Auto show, playing gigs and going to parties. They make a shambolic racket. The drummer struggles to keep time, the guitar sounds out of tune and the bassist likes to have the last word. This is basic guitar music made by kids for kids. From a grandad like me, the best they can hope for is a desire to ruffle their hair. In that respect, they succeed in spades. If they were rehearsing in my garage, I’d take them a tray of sandwiches and mugs of tea.
Live Fast Die Dumb was actually released on cassette in 2013. Axis Mundi Records, not exactly a major record company, obviously believe DUMB are ready for wider exposure. However, I fear they may drown the closer they get to the mainstream. A hit could well destroy their charm. On the other hand, it might change their lives for ever.
I love that bands like this exist, keeping the thrill of guitar alive, completely unknown to most self-respecting adults. I don’t imagine they’ll make many sales on The Afterword.
What does it all *mean*?
There are some people in the world who are enjoying guitar rock without being burdened by history.
Goes well with…
Might suit people who like…
to live in the moment and really let their hair down.
