What does it sound like?:
Everyone will be aware of Queen guitarist Brian May, but in the rock world his collaborator and star of numerous West End and Broadway musicals Kerry Ellis is perhaps not too well known.
Back in 2010, May produced her solo album Anthems, and this led to a successful touring career as a duo.
This new album is their first joint effort, featuring five original compositions and eight cover versions, an eclectic mix of material ranging from pop to rock, via ballads and even show tunes.
Listeners will immediately recognise May’s signature guitar sound, which blends surprisingly well with Ellis’s powerful voice. For me, the original material is the strongest, particularly the opener Love In A Rainbow. There’s certainly a wide mixture of cultural influences and styles on offer here, and the album shows Ellis is far more than just a stage musical performer. Both acquit themselves well on the varied selection of cover versions they’ve included too.
There is something for everyone here, from lovers of Queen type songs to fans of musical theatre – it’s a shame it wasn’t released a week or two earlier as it would have made an ideal Mother’s Day gift.
What does it all *mean*?
There does seem to be a real chemistry between the two artists – it would be interesting to hear a follow up recording consisting entirely of their own material some time in the future.
