What does it sound like?:
Originally released as a limited edition back in 1995, this is a reissued four cd set comprising remastered versions of the albums Buddha Head, Electricity Made Us Angels, Deep Dream Decoder and Juke Box For Jet Boy
These albums were originally recorded between 1988 and 1992. Each is really a sample from Bill Nelson’s musical sketchbook, ideas for songs for possible further musical development. As such, some are nearly complete whilst others are just the basic germs of an idea. Each of the cds though offers something different from the others. Some offer great guitar playing reminiscent of his Be Bop Deluxe days, others are keyboard dominated. Tape loops and voice samples are used to create Eno style sound collages. Taken as a whole, they chronicle his recovery from a very messy divorce, and in particular the final set is both triumphant and joyous in equal measure.
What does it all *mean*?
There’s a whole lot to absorb over the course of these four cds of ambient pop, but there are also a lot of hidden gems to discover. Best approched by dipping in to a little at a time rather than in one continuous sitting.
Goes well with…
