Nearly out of November – what’s the best single thing you’ve hear all month ? For me it is this cracker from Frazey Ford – Done – soulful and powerful

Musings on the byways of popular culture
Locust says
Well, Anna Ternheim has a new album out, and here’s the title track (the lyrics might just speak to the Afterworders…) – “For the Young”:
And I’ve been listening a lot to the new album by Time Is A Mountain but unfortunately only one track is on YouTube and it’s not one of my favourite tracks off the album. Still, it’s not bad, so here it is (“Memento Mono”):
(And here’s a teaser promo for the album where you can hear bits from a few of the other tracks:)
RubyBlue says
Julia Holter: ‘Feel You’. Marvelous.
And *ahem* Guy Garvey: ‘Unwind’.
retropath2 says
Gonna have to investigate the Holter, J. Boho and Unshod each made it no. 1 of the year, I note, a rare collision. I thought I had an earlier one of hers, that had impressed but only briefly, discovering I was thinking her another Julia(nna Barwick) altogether I now see, but her track on Remembering Mountains: the unheard songs of Karen Dalton is a corker as I have also just recalled and listened to.
RubyBlue says
The Julia Holter album is really something else, second only to Sufjan Stevens this year. (Don’t. You. Say. A. Word. :D)
The combination of @tiggerlion ‘s review plus a chat with @carolina (and being a sheep who is influenced by the mags) made me get it and I am mighty glad I did.
SteveT says
Another vote for Guy Garvey – his new album is excellent.
RubyBlue says
Yeah, it’s really good and has a lot less of the epic than Elbow ( a good thing, for me). Seems to have been received with ‘meh’ which is a shame, as it has some lovely light touches, lyrically and musically.
retropath2 says
90% of the (double) album is the best thing I’ve hear all month (year) and I still can’t choose a favourite.
JustB says
For me, it’s Grimes. After well over 10 listens in the last week, I’m pretty sure Art Angels is my album of 2015. Confident, melodic, fizzing with ideas and textures. I absolutely adore it.
Here’s California.
badartdog says
Another vote for Grimes here.
She’s another artist I love but probably wouldn’t have known existed were it not for this site in its current and former incarnations.
RubyBlue says
Thirded. Great album and that’s a really good track. (As is ‘Flesh Without Blood’.)
JustB says
I can hardly pick a favourite track. I adore Scream, with Aristophanes spitting sinisterly away in Chinese. And Kill V Maim is unbelievably good. But so is it all.
Bingo Little says
Belly of the Beat, for me.
But I find I like it more when I listen to the whole thing. I didn’t think much of Kill v Maim when it was first released, it only made proper sense in the context of the album, which is an absolute corker.
JustB says
Ooh, Belly of the Beat is a tune.
Tiggerlion says
Grimes is so talented and multi-skilled, she’s on the bench for Swansea this afternoon against Liverpool.
Bingo Little says
That Frazey Ford album is superb. One of the things I’ve listened to most this year.
This month I’ve been enjoying Black Metal by Max Jury:
Also: Feeling Good Tonight, by Therr Maitz, off that excellent James Lavelle comp Poppy was repping last week. Huge earworm.
Kaisfatdad says
That Max Jury track is excellent. So incongruous though. It’s as though a band like Crucified Anus of Satan was doing a song about the delights of bossa nova.
Feedback_File says
Im in the Julia Holter camp – best thing Ive heard recently and a deffo for end of year best
davebigpicture says
Love the Frazey Ford track and Grimes.
DrewToo says
Having been loving the new EL VY album – like the National go pop.
Deviant808 says
Been listening the debut Ethical Debating Society album (“New Sense”) a lot recently, it’s like Riot Grrl (OK, that’s 90% of you losing interest!) never went away.
My favourite track is “Razor Party”, which isn’t on YouTube or Spotify, so let’s see if this works
New Sense by the ethical debating society
ivylander says
My 19-year-old wised me up to this one. Whoever thought of mixing a Daptone-style band sound with swooping strings and a Chrissie Hynde-alike vocal has my attention for good…
Kaisfatdad says
Dig deeper, @ivylander. The Bamboos are one of the most enjoyable bands in Australia.
ivylander says
My son says the same thing. If two people whose taste I respect are in agreement, there must be something to it….
davebigpicture says
I heard Emily Capell’s Brixton Prison on the radio. She and her band are attracting some interest. A bit rough round the edges but it has a certain charm. It’s not on YouTube but there’s a Soundcloud page here. http://emilycapellmusic.weebly.com/music.html
Tiggerlion says
A few points on the Frazey Ford video:
Superb track from a superlative album.
Those ladies just don’t care, do they? Their outfits could hardly be described as flattering.
Mr. Malo, what took you so long? This was released well into 2014. You’ve missed out on more than a year of pleasure.
el hombre malo says
yeah, but this time last year I had a listening backlog in iTunes of more than 20 days – so I put new stuff on hold until I caught up. Now down to about a day or so “Not Listened Yet”.
Tiggerlion says
OK. I’ll let you off this time.
Lodestone of Wrongness says
Frazey Ford is indeed most excellent, not as good as her old mate Jolie Holland but excellent nonetheless.
Julia Holter’s may just be the second best album of the year and easily the most exciting thing I have listened to in November.
Tiggerlion says
I’m so pleased you got past Julia Holter listen three:
“Phew, came to my senses just in time. Listen 3 revealed it to be the drippy nonsense pretending to be meaningful but drippy nonsense nonetheless I expected it to be. No more skipping my medication….”
?
Lodestone of Wrongness says
Tune in for today’s report – “It really is a dreadful record”
Tiggerlion says
That’s more like it!
I had entertained hope for No Deal but you’ve been consistent with your approprium for that record.
Poppy Succeeds says
Apart from the Lavelle mix I really enjoyed a song by Courtney Barnett, called ‘De-Preston’.
It was good. It reminded me of Kimya Dawson (but then again, everything reminds me of something else at the moment. e.g Ryley Walker = Tim Buckley. Sufjan Stevens = Elliott Smith.)

EMILIE LEVIENAISE-FARROUCH – “Like Water Through The Sand ”
Debut album by a young French pianist living in London. She leads a quintet including 2 violins, viola, cello and a few electronic noises thrown in for good measure.
A lovely record. Modern piano-based instrumental chamber music. Thoroughly enjoyable. Not too austere or prissy. Highly recommended for all fans of ambient music/solo piano-type stuff. Will be interested to know what other Afterworders think…

Beautiful! I’m new to this sort of stuff, if that doesn’t sound too naff and naive, having been recently hoovering up Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm (apart and collectively) and all things recommended when I express an interest (if you like this etc etc, people who bought this have also been buying.)
duco01 says
Well, while I’m at it, maybe I should also mention the Canadian cellist Julia Kent, whose music inhabits roughly the same sort of sphere. Beautiful, electronically treated cello sounds.
I’ve bought and enjoyed two of her old albums, “Green and Grey” and “Character”, but her new release, “Asperities” is sounding like it could be even more majestic….

Kaisfatdad says
I’m pleased and surprised to see that both the Emilie and Julia albums are on Spotify, Duke.
Excellent!
retropath2 says
Thanks (you bastard! i’m supposed to be having a cheap month)
Tiggerlion says
Have you heard Melnyk’s new release, duco?
Try Parasol in Soundcloud.
https://soundcloud.com/search?q=Melnyk
duco01 says
Thanks for the tip, Tigger. The Lubomyr Melnyk sounds good. At the moment, the only album I have by him is the one he did with James Blackshaw, “The Watchers”.
I’ve also just got the Julia Holter album out of the library, after having seen it recommended by you.
Tiggerlion says
I dream that one day, probably far in the distant future, I will make a recommendation that ends up in duco01’s top forty of the year!
duco01 says
Well, I’m currently investigating the full-blown triple CD honkfest “The Epic” by tenor saxman Kamasi Washington, sidekick and general campadre of Tiggerlion favourite Kendrick Lamar!
Do you know the album, tigger? One can hardly complain about the quantity that Mr Washington provides: he gives you LOADS.
Tiggerlion says
Absolutely! It is marvellous, if very long. Maybe he tries to do a tad too much but you can’t fault his enthusiasm and there is plenty for everyone. Nice to hear youngsters playing real jazz.
Your friend, KFD, is very keen on it.
Sewer Robot says
I have been very much enjoying the Millennium album Begin, artistes completely unknown to me before Ahh Bisto drew them to my attention on the sixties thread.
Of more recent vintage I have been wearing out the fairly new Family Of The Year album. There’s something about their no-nonsense harmonies!melodies!choruses!repeat! formula that shoots straight to the pleasure centres of my brain:
(We Need Love)

This is my favourite track of November 2015
