We had the Rugby Sevens here in Singapore this past weekend and Kenya (who were superb) beat Fiji in the final.
Before the final we had the national anthems and this from Kenya is fantastic….
Can anyone do better ?

Spent some time in South Africa and in my view its hard to argue with this

I am sorry to disagree, but the Kenyan national anthem is a dirge.
We have to listen to it at the cinema, before the film starts. We are all supposed to stand for it. Everyone, including Kenyans, looks around, notes that everyone else is still sitting, and carries on munching the popcorn.
The correct answer is, of course, La Marseillaise.

Brazil.
Here are the lyrics:
“Eternally lying on a splendid cradle,
To the sound of the sea and under deep sky light
Thou flarest, O Brazil, crocket of America,
Illuminated by the sun of New World!
Than the showiest land,
Thy smiling, pretty prairies have more flowers
“Our groves have more life”,
“Our life” in thy bosom “more loves”.
O beloved,
Idolized homeland,
Hail, hail!
Brazil, of eternal love be a symbol
The starred labarum which thou displayst
And say the laurel-green of thy pennant
‘Peace in the future and glory in the past.’
But if thou raisest the strong cudgel of Justice,
Thou wilt see that a son of thine flees not from battle,
Nor do those who love thee fear death itself.
Beloved Land,
Amongst a thousand others
Art thou, Brazil,
O beloved homeland!
Of the sons of this ground
Thou art gentle mother,
Beloved homeland,
Brazil!”

Fliipin ‘eck.
Land of my fathers, as sung at the Arms Pack in the 70s.
The Italian is always very jolly.
The Irish anthem, not the awful Oireland Oireland nonsense sung at 6 nations game.
But the winner, of course, is La Marseillaise.
Plus a stop to childrens choirs &pop warblers singing anthems. Just let me the crowd get on with it.

The German national anthem. Whatever lyrics are used, the tune is lovely.
The Sri Lankan. It appears to consist of one short, jolly tune over and over and over again, for several minutes (even in a short version.
As mentioned above, the Italian. Several movements, like a mini-concerto, littered with false endings.

I like this heavy metal anthem from those crazy Tuvans:

The winners are La Marseillaise, one of the new uplifting, non-dirges, and South Africa, especially an a capella version.
fentonsteve says
My fave version of La Marseillaise is Serge Gainsbourg’s reggae version, Aux Armes et cætera, recorded with Sly & Robbie and The I Threes.
DogFacedBoy says
My favourite version is the crowd singing it during Escape To Victoty

I think you’ll find that Israel has the best anthem:
Rigid Digit says
“We cone from Gebrovia, and we don’t give a shit”
Although, I think Billy Connolly made that one up.
