Perhaps due to retaining my two ton Trinitron until relatively recently, I appear to have used an inappropriate cleaning technique on my LCD telly screen, i.e. Mr Muscle Glass Cleaner sprayed directly on to the screen wiped off with kitchen towel. Screen not ruined but there is a distinct and persistent smear visible more in some ambient conditions than others. Any ideas if this is permanent?

No expert, but I strongly suspect your new screen is not made of glass.
I would recommend buying the finest grade microfibre cloth you can get (about a fiver in Sainsburys) and use with a splash of water.
Hopefully this might fix your issue. If not, your screen is probably knacked.

Flat screens are all fronted with a thermoplastic of some kind these days and are easily scratched. Once you’ve scoured the surface with actual physical damage it’s never going to get totally flat again.
In desperation I might try a really soft duster cloth – one of those yellow ones from the supermarket – and some isopropyl alcohol spray (record cleaner, as was).
Puff the merest hint of isopropyl mist onto the screen surface – and then very, very carefully wipe the surface with the clean cloth in a circular motion, without using any pressure. With a bit of luck you’ll remove the ghastly gunk you’ve sprayed the poor thing with, and the underlying surface will be unblemished.
Good luck.
