today, Celtic are listed as 1-50 odds on favourites to win their fifth straight SPL title in a row. For the uninitiated that means that if you fancy Celtic to win the league up there again you will need to put on £50 to have the chance of winning just £1 at the end of the season if they do.
That’s astonishing. A league that was once sneered at for being a ‘two-horse’ race would appear to have lost a horse somewhere.
Is there a more one sided sporting event out there?

Ha ha – any similarity to the premise of this thread with the picture of Harvey Smith showjumping in the one directly below it, it’s purely coincidental, if somewhat serendipitous 🙂
The SPL IS more showjumping that horse racing these days though but …

There’s the Harlem Globetrotters of course.

Why don’t they just present the trophy before the opening game kicks off?
What price a monumental season from Hamilton Academical sweeping all before them and reigning supreme?
Tricky opening game today against Partick Thistle Nil

I’d give you a huge price Rigid. More chance of a Labour Council.
Having said that, is there a better team name than Hamilton Academical. (singular I do believe.) Queen of the South is good too, sort of romantic in a Walter Scottish kind of way.
So much better than the Roar, the Suns or any name ‘new’ teams are lumbered with.
Even ‘Rovers’ – as in Albion is quite good, I think. My all time fave however, is ‘Strollers’.
Bring back the Strollers.

It also means that if the league was played 50 times, Celtic would expect to win it on 49 occasions.
I’ve just put my house on them, those extra couple of grand will come in useful …

Just watching the Celtic game now.
For all of Lawwell’s comments that Rangers demise would have no effect on Celtic, looking at the attendance today and last seasons average, it seems that Celtic’s bottom line is being drastically affected.

Those odds are a shocker, but let’s consider the teams that’ll finish 5th and 6th in the English league, let’s call them Liverpool and Tottenham, and compare their odds (80/1? and 1,000,000/1?) with the perceived odds for the 5th and 6th regarded teams in the Championship, League 1 and League 2 (7/1 each?).

extremely good point sir! Most leagues are a 2 to 4 horse race depending on factors such as population. Really not that big a deal, but for some reason Scotland seems to be highlighted.

I remember reading about Statto, the guy who was on the Skinner and Baddiel football shows. He makes money by putting huge amounts on sure things. I doubt even he would be attracted to a return of 2% one year later.

Compounding the shambolic meaningless of the whole competition, Kilmarnock got beaten 4-0 by Dundee.
Maybe I should sit it out for another season.
