The great 60/70s clear-out continues…another good man gone, although nothing in the papers yet. I heard from a friend of a friend and his Wiki has been updated. I had some dealings with him in the 70s – fine fellow. His amazing Penguin covers, the Beatles stuff, the Sunday Times, there was a time when his crazed visions were everywhere. He also – and not many people know this – discovered the great Robert Rankin, which is how I got to know him.

Had not heard of him, but just had a scoot through some of his covers, loved that period of book illustration, especially Penguins. I do recall his Sunday times stuff though and I see his illustration was used on Elton’s Captain Fantastic album.

He also did all the visuals for Roger Glover’s Butterfly Ball among (plenty of) others…really re-popularized the airbrush in commercial art in a pop-art sort of way – always lumped him in with Michael English and Philip Castle, but Aldridge’s work seemed more personal, certainly more tongue-in-cheek.
