I finally got around to watching The Jam documentary “About The Young Idea” it was really good, Weller was in great form. Anyway Weller admitted that Dr Feelgood were a huge influence on the early sound of The Jam and from the clip of Dr Feelgood that was used it was clear that Wilko’s guitar sound was copied by Weller for “In The City” which was no bad thing (Weller was very honest about his list of influences but maybe that’s a thread for another day). I’ve read a bit about Wilko on the blog but I confess my knowledge of their music is limited to “Milk and Alcohol”. So where do I start?

Funnily enough, Dave, there’s a new 2CD Dr Feelgood (Wilko era) At The BBC 1973-75 released on Nov 27 – next week. Looks like a nice set. Other than that, there’s a 3CD+1DVD Wilko-era box set with all sorts of other goodies which can be had very cheaply here and there.

All Through The City (the above mentioned 3CD + DVD) contains:
“Down By The Jetty”
“Malpractice”
“Stupidity”
“Sneakin’ Suspicion”
and Disc 3 is a host of previously unreleased live tracks.
This is the absolute Essential Feelgood – anything else is just the icing on the cake.
The Oil City Confidential DVD is highly recommended viewing

Yes, I paid about £9 or something for the “All Through the City” 3CD + 1 DVD set.
Incredibly good value. You simply can’t go wrong.
The DVD is enormous fun, with a couple of half-hour sets filmed in Newcastle and Southend, plus a few other odds and ends. Lee Brilleaux has his filthy old white suit on, of course. It just wouldn’t be the same without it. What extraordinary live performers they were. Absolutely riveting.
And 10 bonus points for the excellent sleeve notes essay by poet Hugo Williams. Marvellous.

You really don’t need to dig any deeper than those two. In fact it’s better not to.

Also, can’t link as I’m on the phone, but have a gander at ‘Going Back Home – Live at the Kursaal’ on YouTube.
Magnificent.

In addition to the Julien Temple Wilko film mentioned by minibreakfast, I would strongly recommend getting hold of a copy of the ‘Oil City Confidential’ DVD (also directed by JT). In particular, the extras DVD is a treat.

I’ll second that. A cracking film. I caught the cinema premiere where after the film, a live set by Wilko from(I think) Koko in London was shown as it happened. It has to be said, Wilko in HD on a huge cinema screen was not the prettiest sigt I’ve ever seen!

As a major Jam/Weller fan I’d suggest (echoing people above) Down By The Jetty – I’d say this is the above and beyond must have purchase. The whole sound of that album is all over punk and new wave. The track All Through The City has some guitar work on it that is just so Weller you won’t believe your ears. Jam tunes like Changed My Address are pure Feelgoods, sound of the band, the guitar playing, the vocals, with just a tip towards The Who. Even the cover of Down By The Jetty, with a little hair cut or two (apart from the ever sharp Wilko) could be a Mod/New wave album cover from a few years later.
Floorboards Up from Weller’s solo career is also pretty much a Feelgoods tribute, so he’s still a fan somewhere.
