Today I actually feel sorry for Paul McCartney.
His 64th birthday must have been such a field day for the media thanks to That Song.
But Purcell, Wynton Marsalis, The Muppets, The Smiths, a Slovenian choir in Nashville, a personalized birthday card from Monopoli, and much more besides … This thread is turning out very nicely.
Thanks everyone.
fentonsteve says
Funny you should mention That Song. Knowing how much you enjoy a Russian male voice choir, I found this (they’re not Russian, though):

A slightly more important reason to celebrate!
100 years ago today, on the 10th October 1917 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Thelonius Sphere Monk (what a cool name) was born.
A friend sent me that clip with this quote:
“The great thing about life is, no matter how long it’s taken you to come to someone like Monk your days thereafter can only get better”
Any more favourite tracks by the maestro?
Declan says
Yep, Monk’s Mood for French Horn ensemble with celeste. Nice..
Not to mention Kronos Quartet performing Round Midnight

You’ll have to be a bit less subtle if you want to be understood around here, dear boy!
H.P. Saucecraft says
You’re mistaking me for someone who wants to be subtle and understood? When did that happen?

I posted this with a piece of my writing, last year. @Kaisfatdad said that it was a wonderful introduction to a great song, which made me grin from ear to ear.

Today, you might be an average citizen … a civilian … a pedestrian … But tomorrow you might be elected to some unexpected office–or sell your novel and suddenly become famous. Or you could get run over by a truck and your picture could get into the papers _that_ way. Because you’re free and anything might happen … so happy birthday.
Moose the Mooche says

The world needs more boyish enthusiasm.
Kaisfatdad says
Boyish! I like to be described as boyish, Moose!
Even if “Old boyish” is nearer the mark.
What a lot of very generous compliments and fine music this thread produced.
To paraphrase that kind chap Mr Hairnet:
