Tony Christie of Amarillo fame lives in Lichfield. Apparently when he goes into the local chippie he gets some vinegar from the pickled egg jar for his wife. Wonder if he has that on his rider when he tours?

Just down the road from Lichfield, in Polesworth, North Warwickshire, there’s a house called Pooley Hall. In the 80s and 90s Northern Soul legend Edwin Starr lived there. Edwin once had his friend Stevie Wonder over to visit him and during his stay Stevie allegedly touched a cow for the first time in his life…

I used to live in Polesworth – famously mentioned in Julian Copes Reynard the Fox.

Yes, Stevie said that was the inspiration for the song ‘For Once In My Life’.
Stevie got to return the favour when Edwin visited him and Stevie let him have a go on his special Braille-assisted field artillery installation, prompting Edwin to exclaim “War! Huh! good-God! What is it good for?”

And after that disappointment Edwin, realising he’d missed the last bus, still had to walk twenty five miles home…

I met his namesake Lou Christie, the Lightning Strikes hitmaker, in Poole bus station around 1970. I was on my way home from school and got talking to this cool looking guy in a black t-shirt and with an American accent (both rare in Poole in 1970), apparently he was dating a local girl. I’d never heard of him and had to ask around at school the next day to find out who he was (imagine that kids – a world before internet)
