I would be very impressed if I came across a fellow follower of Van’ s great early stuff, equally if they knew, for example,On the Beach or The Poet 2….what would you put down as a marker?

If they mentioned liking the Jayhawks I would be impressed.

Veedon Fleece, easily my favourite Van Morrison album.
I tend to always get along just fine with fellow aficionados of Stormcock by Roy Harper or those enlightened souls who are attuned to the magnificence of Rock Bottom from Robert Wyatt.

Pencil is of course spot on re VF.

Honest question: why would you want to impress someone in this way?
pencilsqueezer says
It’s either this or stripping off to display the rather fetching Balinese dancing girl tattoo emblazoned across one’s rippling torso.
JustB says
I’ve got a nude Richard Thompson on mine.
pencilsqueezer says
How can you tell it’s him without the hat?
JustB says
He actually has a tattoo of the hat under the hat.
pencilsqueezer says
Now that’s impressive.

Yeah, it’s the kind of impulse you are supposed to grow out of after 21.

Like you believe that? Mind you, many who have tried the FB quiz ageing you on the basis of some musical questions are a good deal less…

To answer Bob,it would be a reason for me to queue up for two hours getting tickets for Steely Dan a few months ago,to go with a friend who i bonded with over mutual love of certain bands, initially Ryan Adams and Band of Horses…he had heard of VF but back in pre Spotify days was eager to borrow my copy…if he loved Meat Loaf don’t think our paths would have crossed too much tbh!

Any album by The Nits – especially if the “someone with musical knowledge” is non-European.
Artery says
I wouldn’t want to impress anyone, but I would want them to hear an obscure album that they almost certainly haven’t heard before and just might fill a hole in their musical heart.
I would choose Playback by The Appletree Theatre. A favourite of John Peel and John Lennon back in 1968 but languishing unheard and unappreciated ever since. It was finally released on CD a few years ago. It is an (unfashionably} East Coast psychedelic masterpiece, a little dated in places but redeemed by some utterly gorgeous melodies. Hightower Square and You’re The Biggest Thing In My Life are truly great tunes.
Other candidates are Forbidden Songs Of The Dying West by Jackie Leven and The Twelve Dreams Of Doctor Sardonicus by Spirit.

Definitely ‘Immigrant’ by Gene Loves Jezebel.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Immigrant came out in 1985, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. Gene Loves Jezebel have been compared to Flesh For Lulu, but I think Gene Loves Jezebel have a far more bitter, cynical sense of humour.

Thanks for suggesting this, didn’t expect some of the negative comments above tbh….im giving it a spin and on first thoughts it’s much more melodic than I thought it might be,early 10,000 Maniacs came to mind initially, who I like.Great to discover new band years later…

Immigrant? Yes, it’s brilliant! I was paraphrasing American Psycho in my post for no good reason, but I do genuinely love the album (although I’m not sure I’d play it to someone to impress them…)

I moved to the states so I’ve had a chance to actually experience seeing brer Americans hearing stuff for the first time. I would guess that the album that usually pleasantly surprises them the most is The Stone Roses
