Woyoyoyoyoyoyoyoyoyyyy!
In other words, how interesting!
P.S.. the difference in price between HMV and Amazon for the LP set is over seventy quid!

Looks good and certainly no complaints on the contents (but with Scary Monsters on this box set, who will buy the next one……).
My only gripe on these Bowie box sets is that I want to buy these in the best possible quality and so am prepared to pay a premium for the 24bit / 192KHz download version. However if I do that, I miss out on the Lodger remix and the Re:Call disc, both of which are exclusive to the CD / Vinyl boxes.
I can understand leaving these off iTunes / Amazon / Spotify etc, but if I’m paying a premium, surely its not too much to ask to include.
Quality or completeness – the tough decision to make.

Yeah, I feel your pain. With the others, I gave in and bought both… eventually. At least the downloads don’t need another box for Mrs F. to glare at.

Not fussed by anything after “The Lodger” except maybe “Scary Monsters”. Spiritually, I think “Station to Station” is a perfect starter for this run, and underlines what an astonishing late 70s he had, given his amazing first half of the decade. Seriously, barring “BlackStar” as his swansong, what else do you need? “Glass Spider”? “Tin Machine”? “Heathen”?
Neela says
You DO need Heathen. At least I do. It’s one of my favourites.
Tiggerlion says
I particularly love Buddha Of Suburbia. 1.Outside is superb once you remove the chit-chat. Realty is a fantastic album. Finally, how can anyone fail to recognise the wonder that is The Next Day?
Neela says
1. Outside needs another chance. It’s not an album to play in the background. I really need to listen properly to that.
Shame the two planned sequals never showed up. Not sure how “planned” they were though.
DogFacedBoy says
I liked the Baby Grace chit chat in Outside. It makes me laugh every time. Especially the little cough.
Black Type says
Tin Machine I and II are worth having. BTWN is pretty decent, and all the rest of his 90s/00s output is, for me, top-notch. To be fair it’s only Tonight and NLMD that I would largely steer clear of, and even they have their moments.
Moose the Mooche says
Amen.

Do we really need both the original and the reissue of Stage?
What I find irritating about these sets is the absence of bonus tracks from previous reissues. If they want to keep the original albums as they were, surely they could go on an extra disc.
fatima Xberg says
It’s not about what you or “we” need. Someone – most probably Bowie – decided that the point of this series of boxes was the original releases. And they remembered the First Rule Of Steven Wilson: even if you think your new mix is an improvement, always include the original!
DogFacedBoy says
Rarities box is planned. I say keep em separate so I don’t have to buy same again for just couple of tracks.
Do think doubling up on the live albums is totally pointless.

Claudia Brücken. Didn’t she used to be married to top pretentious Mancunian former NME scribe Paul Morley?

Bet that was fun round the breakfast table.
“Sugar, Paul?”
“If Shakespeare was alive today he’d come back as All Saints, only he wouldn’t be as good.”
“Milk?”
“Manchester is the centre of the universe. Not London.”
“Frosties?”
“London? Why did you bring that up? Never heard of the place. I was talking about Manchester.”
“I’m leaving you, Paul, because you are a knob-cheese.”
“You’re Dick Whittington, right, and you have a cat, and you’ve got the choice of going to London or Manchester, and you decide, you and Tiddles, to go to London. What I don’t get is if you’ve got the choice of going to London or Manchester etc. etc. …”

I’ve got this thing about pre 1980s music that I’d rather have a reasonably good used Vinyl copy rather than a reissue – doesn’t need to be an original and don’t mind if it’s a bit lived in. I’ve got early-ish pressings of most of these albums that I’ve had for years and they’ll do for me. I’m not a big enough Bowie fan to want remasters and a not terribly thrilling bonus disc. So I’ll probably pass on this unless anyone can convince me I’m missing out on something special…and I’m happy to be proved wrong btw
Tiggerlion says
I don’t do vinyl but the mastering on the CDs in these boxes is tremendous. They are high spec, gold discs. Albums like The Man Who Sold The World and Hunky Dory have never sounded better. They even recognise when they can’t do any better, such as the 2012 Aladdin Sane, a truly masterful remaster.
As for remixes, the Harry Maslin mix of Station To Station is revelatory, worth the hundred quid the box cost by itself. My one disappointment, so far, is Young Americans, which sounds sumptuous, full and warm on Tony Visconti’s 2007 version. Here, it’s tinny and the instruments are too separated to act as the comforting, balming oil for the ear it’s meant to be. The Ghouster is just as bad.
Overall, despite the fact I have all these albums many times over already, money well spent.
I’m a bit nervous about the Berlin trilogy, I must say. The last set of remasters weren’t so good. I think they have some work to do. Fingers crossed. But, it’s about time Lodger got a fair shake.
deramdaze says
This is the bit in QI when the unfunny comedian says the obvious answer and the, ironically given the thread’s title, klaxon goes off.
Any danger of an As and Bs?
I see The Doors are having the luxury of such a release bestowed on them in September.
Really looking forward to it, but Bowie’s back catalogue from Liza Jane to Holy Holy is far more interesting in terms of stand-alone a and b-sides.
Can someone do it? Please. Ace?
As now appears to be “ker-ching time” in Bowie-world it can’t be beyond the wit of man, surely?

“A new career in a new town”
That’s a nice title for the set, I think.
Mousey says
Yes, I like the look of this. And Lodger is possibly my favourite Bowie album. Maybe one for the New Year sales?

Pretty pointless to buy this all over again on CD. This is now the 4th or 5th time they have tried to get it right!
It is of more interest for sad vinyl fetishists who want pristine copies of over played albums along with a needless big book and a box. Naturally I have pre-ordered.
* at initial bargain Amazon.com price, may well end up cancelling and just getting triple Stage set when they are released separately
Iain McKinney says
I’m with you. I know the box and the book are unnecessary. I’m going to meetings about the vinyl fetishism.
I have pre ordered, and will not cancel. It’s to be delivered the day before my birthday. Yay!
