Another would be Rolled on Southern Blues by Mainstream, whose cd I bought and would have to say it has THE most tacky cover art in my collection…not sure what they were thinking of….if you like Traffic circa Low Spark… you will like this for sure.
The vocal delivery and the basic tune are slightly reminiscent of something Oasis might have come up with on an exceptionally good day.
But the Gallaghers could never in a month of Sundays have got a groove like that one going. I really like that.
A track I fell in love with on the free Word CD was Lover, Love Her by Steve Pilgrim, ex-drummer with The Stands (and presently for Paul Weller). The lovely studio version isn’t on youtube, but here he is performing it live:
I love that album! I bought it off the back of a review and track on a covermount (probably Uncut), and it still gets played fairly regularly now. The penultimate track, Acetylene, is right around the top of my most-played list in iTunes.
Went nowhere? Well all things are relative I guess, but Jeffrey Foucault continues to write and perform, and has dished up half a dozen pretty decent albums, and this track comes from 2011’s Horse Latitudes. Ditto the Cash Brothers below, whose moment in the sun was pleasurable but all too brief.
Didn’t mean it as an insult…would have loved him and other artists to have gotten more mainstream plaudits…my opening two posts didn’t register with anyone yet!
I bought this one as well. It’s okay, but nothing on it is as good as the free track. He also did an album of murder songs called Seven Curses a few years ago with someone called Mark Erelli. That’s worth a listen, full of good covers including Powderfinger, Johnny 99, Ellis Unit One…
“Someone called Mark Erelli…….” Someone rather good called Mark Erelli, that is, who, as well as solo and with Jeffrey Foucault, also performs with Barnstar
You are pulling out loads of records I know! Secret Machines were great for the first two albums, then one of the brothers left to form School Of Seven Bells (and then sadly died a few years ago). SM continued for one album, but it wasn’t as good. The Astral Weeks cover will be from a covers EP they did around the time of the first album (which is even better than Ten Silver Drops), which also included a really good take on De Luxe (Immer Wieder) by Harmonia.
Cheers mate as you may know I only joined a few days ago and getting a buzz from responses from people like yourself…I put up a clip of Counting Crows singing There is a light…and got the response Wow…made my day…! Ta..
He’s written with Boo Hewerdine, before going on to be a big-time producer in Nashville with Stevie Nicks, Sugababes, Duffy, and many more. I met him once, an odd cove.
Deacon Blue Ambivalence (sounds like a medical complaint).
Own, and still (sometimes) listen to Raintown and When The World Knows Your Name, after that … bits and pieces, but not actively sought them out.
I can see/hear the “Celtic Connection”
Trivia Time:
I thought he’d released this one song and album and then nothing – he ended up as a producer and produced Duffy’s Rockferry album, and co-wrote four tracks (including “Mercy”)
Seen DB plenty over the years and Ricky Ross solo the other year in very small venue in Dublin, that was a treat as he chats too…they are doing a festival gig in a racetrack with retro 1980s vibe that I will pass on!
I remember this catching my ear when it popped up while shuffling an old Word CD. Never heard their name again – just looked ’em up and they don’t have a Wiki entry although they do have two albums on Spotty, one of which is (urgh!!) a collection of covers of overfamiliar hits* and the other, dipping in, sounds promising although it doesn’t feature this song..
(Paris Motel – I Lost My Heart/Philippe, Philippe)
* After Blondie the only people who should be allowed to cover Hanging On The Telephone are The Jesus And Mary Chain circa 1985..
Scott McCarl was bassist, sometime vocalist and a songwriter with Raspberries on their ’74 album “Starting Over”, which includes the wonderful “Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)”.
Sparrow and the Workshop were quite a favourite of mine. They were one of about five songs I liked on the Word free CDs, which I thought of as a reasonable return for five years subscription.
Here’s ‘The Devil Song’ from said free CD. As far as I’m aware they never did anything, although they have loads on youtube so i may have missed something.
“About 5 songs” – 4 Real? This thread is about those acts who “went nowhere” but over the lifetime of the Word CDs I must have been pushed to buy a couple of dozen albums and was introduced to many artistes who went on to become enduring favourites (while, of course, bemoaning “all that rubbish” on most of ’em) – I would guess my experience is more typical than yours….?
Well, artists I went away and brought stuff because I REALLY liked it. Sadly a lot of it didn’t really fit with me. That said I still have most of the CDs (40 odd) in a box in the loft. Well, you never know 🙂
Are you looking at my record collection? I f**king LOVED Marah. That Kids In Philly album is great, and so were (most of) the follow ups. They were a fantastic live act, just superb rock n roll abandon. I saw them in Whelans in Dublin (top venue) and then again a few years later in London with Nick Hornby. They’re playing again now, and have a few UK / Irish dates coming up, but none anywhere near me, more’s the pity.
They always used to finish with this blinder, which they never put on an album. This clip is from one of the shows I was at, and I was spontaneously levitating by the end of it.
Brilliant for you to say that! I live in Dublin and for sure Whelans is the place for intimate gigs…seen Fairport Convention,Hothouse Flowers,Luka Bloom and other less known bands there…cheers!
Good idea for a thread. I used to really enjoy the “Word” CDs and there were many family favourites by bands never heard of before or since. This “Team Me” one was very popular with me and the kids. (Im trying this Spotify link thing for the first time.)
Thanks for that,I too only worked out how to post stuff the other day…as you can see its become addictive! My first two posts on this thread were ignored which was a blow!
True dat…good to see other genre of music…prefer later artists like Black Uhuru and Aswad personally but I would have moved to this in the DubTent at Glastonbury in 1982 for sure….courtesy of the Dread Broadcasting Corporation!!
Can’t remember which magazine it was from but I have a cover-CD alt-country compilation called Sounds of the New West that features a song called “Tarmac” by Hazeldine. Wikipedia tells me that are no more.
I can’t access Youtube from work to search for a link but if you find it I think the label NSFW may apply as the lyrics feature a somewhat unexpected (and quite amusing in its abruptness) use of the F-word.
I can think of a few, but I loved this lot, and had a chat with the bass player after a Water Rats gig. They’d had their merch CDs impounded in Spain and were knackered and out of pocket, even then. Their previous UK gig had been supporting Oasis at Earl’s Court. Broke up about five years ago.
This lot -“January” – were on an Uncut or Mojo cd. This track ” All time” was by far the best track on the album from 2001 …slightly epic soaring guitar rock… does take a while to get going though.
Evening! I vaguely remember South but it didn’t do much for me I’m afraid. Cherry Ghost however ( see below) , the first album is great, a couple of standout tracks. Shame that the second and third didn’t quite match up.
I suppose we could squeeze this through on a technicality. I was well surprised when a track from a new James Kirk album turned up on an Uc**t CD. While I wasn’t completely bowled over by this particular song, I liked it enough to buy the album (which, living up to its “I Am The Cosmos” front cover, really is fantastic) and – in the sense that he’s done nothing since – you could say he “went nowhere”…
Love this album. Saw him a couple of times, once as a support and once in a small London venue.
Stuck a couple of tracks on a playlist for a recent holiday and was reminded how much I enjoy him.
I collected the free CDs from Uncut, Mojo and Word for ages. Then I ran out of space and gave them to Niscum. We did a handover outside the Old Bailey. And Carolina had all my old Word magazines.
