It is strange that his website says he first came to notice with King Crimson, and omits to mention Family. He played on two of their finest albums Fearless and Bandstand.
I never realised he played on “Burlesque” though there seems to be a bit of doubt? Sounds like him. And his playing and singing on “Starless and bible black” is fantastic. I never heard UK – any good?
I saw UK (mark 2 with Terry Bozio instead of Bruford) – they were OK, nothing more as far as I recall.
Lauren Laverne (?) played a track in tribute to JW on R6 the other day – it was ‘My Friend The Sun’ from the Family album Bandstand. Strangely it’s a track with next to no bass guitar so just a few backing vocals from JW. Nice song mind you.
Family
King Crimson
Uriah Heep
U.K
Wishbone Ash
Asia
……amongst others.
John has sung and played wonderful bass on some fantastic songs. His long-term writing partner and friend Geoff Downes just posted this track, as one from Asia’s recent past, that John was particularly proud of.
Adding Cross and Muir to the Red line-up turned King Crimson into the least mainstream band in rock for a time, eccentric, thrusting, and probing, Bruford clearly having a ball, and Wetton playing a blinder at centre half. You were a good ‘un, John.

I’m sad to hear that.

Did he fall out badly with Chappo and Whitney?

And what about Mogul Thrash?

Mogul Thrash are a band beyond my ken.
I have come across the name over the years but neither knew their personnel nor their music.

Let’s rock…

I thought for a moment I was listening to Chicago.
Which from that era was quite acceptable.

@niallb
I really like that!
Can’t say I’ve heard any Asia since the debut and King Crimson etc aren’t for me but that was lovely…thanks.

One of my faves from Crimson days. Amazing track.
niallb says
And, of course, one of the most recognisable bass lines in rock.
niallb says
I saw this line-up on only their 2nd or 3rd gig. Mind blowing. And that bass through a wah-wah? What a sound.

A brilliant artist. Started the day at work with Red this morning, still one of the greatest albums ever.

Surprised no one has mentioned Roxy Music. Had to check to confirm.

Solo Ferrari as well – In Your Mind was one of those albums that everybody had a copy of back in the day.

I fear this year is going to be as bad as 2016.
Nice heartfelt tributes by Asia colleagues Geoff Downes and Carl Palmer on the band’s facebook page.
