Everything about it screams a song I should hate: slick good looking boys, tinny 80s overproduction, crap video, even. And yet I love it. I think maybe it is the guy’s voice and the fact that they are called Halo Jones that wins me over.
Anyone else got songs they love and are at a loss to explain why?
Dave Ross says
It’s a glorious slice of 80’s pop that no one in clear conscience could say they dislike, thanks for the reminder
ganglesprocket says
I hate,
– hippies
– preciousness
– pseudo poetic guff
– anything “mystical”
– anything proggy
So why the fuck do I like The Incredible String Band, especially this thing? It should be everything I hate (except Bono) in one package…
Bogart says
As a punky Rocky folksy groggy musical snob…..I still have a soft spot for this ….. pure bubble gum pop at its best..http://youtu.be/1mvOLDaetiI

I have 3 Take That songs on my pod, but this is probably the best, ever an ear worm if I heard one
Harry Tufnell says
This is Britpop – ugh! What’s to like?
Somehow though, I still think is’s brilliant.

I’ve always loved Marshall Hain’s Dancing In The City. Even back in the day when punk was the thing. On paper it sounds awful – fluffy disco-pop with none-more-80’s synth drums. But it’s sultry and somehow very sexy (as was the lovely Ms Hain).
Jackthebiscuit says
Marshall Hain’s Dancing In The City – I agree with you Gary, great record IMHO.
count jim moriarty says
I’ll third that. A warning – there is a horrible 90’s remix out there which I inadvertently downloaded. Fortunately, I was able to rip the original from YouTube.
Rigid Digit says
I love all that dance music stuff (not).
So why do I like this so much?
Oceanic – Insanity
Clive says
Inexplicable? Not sure, coz it’s a bloody great pop tune. Isn’t it?

A very 1978 cover of a cover of a Chuck Berry classic.
Corn on the cob with cheese melted all over it.
Although, judging by the cover, it’s not intended to be taken seriously.

Something very likeable about this. And Sophie has one of those faces you can’t stop looking at.

“Murder On The Dancefloor” was written by Gregg Alexander of the New Radicals’ “You Get What You Give” fame, so he clearly knows his way around a choon…
My own contribution to this thread would be The Corrs’ “Runaway” – I can’t stand anything else they’ve done, and in all honesty don’t know what it is about that one song, as on paper it’s the same as all the rest of their super-easy pop-lite nonsense ouvre, but I just love it…

It may be my age, but personally, I’d much rather look at her mum!

*Harry Hill’s Stoufer voice* She’s got a biiiiig face!
It’s a great pop record. What’s not to like, you prog fuckerz?
goodfella says
She’s strikingly pretty and it’s a fantastic song. There’s also something Morrissey-like in her phrasing.
Kaisfatdad says
Another Up for Sophie. Marvelously melodic pop song.
How could anyone not like that goodfella?
Mavis Diles says
Poptastic! Jennifer Paige – Crush… I love this…
Mavis Diles says
Cheesy… but also a great slice of pop! Check out the 80s production values… Boy Meets Girl, Waiting for a Star to Fall…

I really LOVE this song:

You’re not alone!
I bought an album on the strength of this song. I have listened to the album approximately once.

Wonderfully enjoyable thread BJB.
Lots of skeletons cascading out of closets!
How can I possibly enjoy this piece of right-wing propaganda?

And how can i find this song by Jeanette so irresistible? It’s so sugary, girly and hippy-dippy.. But it works every time.

Gosh you always find something different, KFD.
Here is a bit of very old Fashioned AOR that inexplicably was a hit a couple of years back and, even more inexplicably, I always end up singing along with:

Quite a few years back there was a poll in Italy to vote for the most popular Italian songs. Questo Piccolo Grande Amore came Number one. I was teaching English in the mid 80s in Brighton and one of the Italian student girls sung it astonishingly well a capella at a social gathering. Never to be forgotten.
BigJimBob says
If I was in Italy I would have voted for this. A truly magnificent – and very Italian – ending on it.
Kaisfatdad says
Enjoyed that a lot BJB. A new name for me.
BigJimBob says
Honest, he is really really good
Kaisfatdad says
Another song that I feel I really oughtn’t to like: breathy, romantic Francophone pop with lashing of strings and not a guitar in sight. Mais je l’adore!

Everything about this screams “this is mawkish shite – turn it off” …but I love it. I warn you, however, under no circumstances seek out the video – embedding has been disabled on Youtube for good reason.
Randy Travis – Forever and Ever, Amen
Kaisfatdad says
Ainsley, there is no better way to make us want to see the video.
I was expecting full frontal nudity or decapitations and buckets of gore. It was just a tad pink.
Nice song though.
